Alternative music came about due to frustration with mainstream classic rock, and drew inspiration from earlier punk music. It got pretty popular with songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, which was one of the first mainstream hits. Basically half of the stuff on triple j in the 90s was alternative.
